At Telford Towbars in Telford Shropshire, we have all the information you need to tow your caravan or trailer safely and efficiently. From what type of car is best suited for towing, how much weight can be pulled, and more! If you’re new to this world, then we are here to help. Our advice will make sure that your journey is safe and enjoyable every time.

You don’t want any surprises when it comes time to hit the road with your new caravan or trailer in tow. That’s why we provide everything you need right here on our website so that there are no unpleasant surprises along the way.

After spending lots of money on a holiday, the last thing anyone wants is that something unexpected like a faulty brake light switch could ruin it all at once!

So please read our blog post before heading out into the great unknown with us by your side every step of the way!

Safety is Essential

  1. Do not exceed the maximum towing weight for your vehicle

  2. Keep sufficient distance between you and other vehicles on the road

  3. Ensure that all passengers are wearing their seatbelts before setting off

  4. Drive with care – do not overtake or undertake other drivers, especially when visibility is low

  5. Take extra caution when driving over bridges or through tunnels

  6. If you experience any problems, pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and contact your local police station immediately

  7. Make sure you have a caravan license to tow your caravan

  8. When driving, stay in the right-hand lane and keep a safe distance from the car in front of you

  9. Always use indicators when changing lanes or turning corners

  10. If you are towing a trailer with your caravan, make sure it is adequately secured for safety reasons

  11. Never exceed the speed limit – if there’s no sign saying otherwise, follow the national speed limit shown on signs at roadworks or temporary speed limits set up by police officers

  12. Keep an eye out for cyclists who may be riding alongside cars and vans before overtaking them as they can’t see what’s coming from behind them; also, watch out for pedestrians who might step into your path without looking first!

  13. Research the best routes to take for your caravan

  14. Check the height of bridges and tunnels, as well as any other obstacles along your route

  15. Know what you can tow with a caravan – this includes cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and even pedestrians

  16. Make sure you have a good quality tow ball hitch on both vehicles before starting out

  17. Don’t forget to pack lots of food and water in case there’s an emergency stop-over!

  18. Be prepared for extreme weather conditions by packing appropriate clothing and blankets

  19. Ensure that all passengers wear seatbelts while travelling in vehicles (unless exempted), including those sitting in the back seats of large vehicles such as buses and coaches where belts are not fitted as standard equipment

  20. Install emergency lights on trailers so others know you’re about to turn left or right; this is especially important if traffic conditions mean visibility is poor ahead

If you are travelling a distance, you can make use of our National Heritage here in Telford, we are sponsors of the Iron Bridge Museum so we can offer free tickets for a maximum of six people for an excellent day out: https://www.ironbridge.org.uk/.

Towbars have been extremely popular over the last year with more and more people staying at home in the UK for their holidays or taking their cars, trailers, campervans etc. into Europe to avoid trains and aeroplanes.

We will explain the different types to simplify the process and help you choose the correct towbar for your use.

So here we go…

If you are using our website Telford Towbars or speaking to someone, these are the steps we will talk through or explain:

First Step

Choose from three types of Towbars:

1. Detached

  • Suitable for vehicles with reversing sensors
  • In most instances, the system is completely invisible once the neck is removed
  • Compatible with AL-KO and other friction style stabilisers
  • Allows free access to the rear of the vehicle
  • Lockable with a set of two keys provided
  • Storage bag provided for safekeeping once next is removed

2. Flange

  • Popular in the UK
  • It can be used with accessories such as bumper guard and tow-steps
  • Tow ball height can be adjusted on some commercial vehicles
  • Capable of using accessories like some models of cycle carriers whilst towing

3. Swan Neck

  • Compatible for use with AL-KO stabiliser without the requirements of a replacement ball
  • Less likely to affect reversing sensors
  • Not compatible with common accessories such as bumper protectors or tow-steps
  • It cannot be used for a cycle carrier whilst towing at the same time
  • More aesthetically pleasing than a flange style towbar

You are now a step closer to your mobile towbar fitting.

Once you have chosen what type of towbar, then you can select the type of electrics, or we can advise you. There are two types, and here we explain the difference to help you with what you need.

Second Step

1. 7-pin Vehicle Specific Single Electrics

When you are towing a standard trailer or have a lighting board attached and even a bike carrier, a 7-pin vehicle specific kit will enable all of your light functions for this job. A 7-pin Vehicle Specific Single Electrics kit provides all of the basic legal lighting requirements for towing and harnesses perfectly with your car. Here at Telford Towbars, we never fit by-pass or universal electrics to your vehicle!

What can a 7-pin electric socket power do?

  • Left indicator
  • Right indicator
  • Taillights
  • Fog lights
  • Brake lights

2. 13-pin Vehicle Specific Electrics

You will need a 13-pin Vehicle Specific Electrics kit for towing a caravan because it provides all of the legal lighting requirements for towing, as well as powering the electrics inside your caravan. Most caravans manufactured after January 2009 will have 13-pin electrics and will also connect to your reverse lights whilst providing a full power supply inside your caravan. Please note that if you have the older 12n 12s style electrics, we will still fit the latest electrics to your vehicle and provide a 12n 12s to 13 pin adapter.

What can a 13-pin electric socket power do?

  • Left indicator
  • Right indicator
  • Taillights
  • Fog lights
  • Brake lights
  • Reverse lights
  • Caravan electric (inside)

That’s it!

Your next step is to get it fitted by our mobile towbar specialists here in Telford.

And don’t forget we want to keep you mobile with the offer of a courtesy car and you can have a day out at the Iron Bridge Museum which is a great day out for the family.

Telford Towbar - BLOG Social Media Templates B+E Licence changes being made by the DVSA

B+E Licence Changes Being Made by the DVSA

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your car driving test. The rules will change later in 2021. The new rules will still depend on when you originally passed your car driving test. There are different rules for towing if you live in Northern Ireland. Licences issued before 1 January 1997 you will not be affected by the changes. You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check. You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg. MAM is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded.

Licences issued from 1 January 1997 to 18 January 2013

If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997 to 18 January 2013, you can currently drive either of the following: a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total)a trailer over 750kg MAM, as long as it is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500kg in total)You’ve had to pass a car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.

Licences issued from 19 January 2013

If you passed your car driving test from 19 January 2013, you can currently drive either of the following: a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total)a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg. You’ve had to pass a car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.

What will change later in 2021

If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’ll be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM when the law changes. DVLA will update your driving licence record to show that you’re allowed to tow trailers. You’ll get category BE added to your driving licence when you get a new photocard driving licence. You do not need to contact DVLA for this to happen. It will be done automatically. The date the law will change has not yet been confirmed. Sign up for email alerts to be told when the law changes. Car and trailer driving tests are stopping from 20 September 2021. You can no longer book or take a car and trailer driving test from 20 September 2021. However, the law will not change until later in 2021.

What you can do until the law changes

Until the law changes later in autumn 2021, you must continue to follow the current rules about what you’re allowed to tow based on when you passed your car driving test. You can be fined up to £1,000, be banned from driving and get up to 6 penalty points on your driving licence if you tow anything heavier before the law changes. You’re only allowed to tow anything heavier if you’re being supervised. When you’re being supervised, you must:display L plates to the front of the car and the rear of the trailer be accompanied by a person who’s at least 21 years old and has had category BE on their driving licence for at least 3 years. Driving a car and trailer for the first time It’s best to take training from a driving instructor if you want to start driving a car and trailer.

The ‘National standard for driving cars and light vans’ tells you about the skills, knowledge and understanding you need to tow a trailer or caravan. You can also read about why learning to tow is important, safety checks you should do when you’re towing a trailer or caravan with a car.
