Swan Neck

  • Compatible for use with AL-KO stabiliser without the requirements of a replacement ball
  • Less likely to affect reversing sensors
  • Not compatible with common accessories such as bumper protectors or tow-steps
  • Cannot be used for a cycle carrier whilst towing at the same time
  • More aesthetically pleasing than a flange style towbar

Detached

  • Suitable for vehicles with reversing sensors
  • In most instances the system is completely invisible once the neck is removed
  • Compatible with AL-KO and other friction style stabilisers
  • Allows free access to the rear of the vehicle
  • Lockable with a set of two keys provided
  • Storage bag provided for safe keeping once next is removed

Flange

  • Popular in the UK
  • Can be used with accessories such as bumper guard and tow-steps
  • Tow ball height can be adjusted on some commercial vehicles
  • Capable of using accessories like some models of cycle carriers whilst towing

Horizontal Detachable

A horizontal detachable towbar is a type of trailer hitch where the towball assembly can be removed by sliding it in and out horizontally from behind the vehicle. When it's detached, the mounting mechanism is largely hidden, leaving the rear of the car looking much cleaner than with a fixed towbar.

How it works

  • The towbar neck (the part with the towball) inserts horizontally into a receiver under the bumper.
  • It locks securely in place with a key-operated or lever-operated locking mechanism.
  • When you're not towing, you unlock it, remove the neck, and often fit a protective cover over the receiver.

Advantages

  • Cleaner appearance: The towball isn't visible when removed.
  • Preserves parking sensors and styling: Less chance of false sensor alerts and maintains the car's original look.
  • Better shin protection: No permanent towball to bump into.
  • Secure: Lockable to prevent theft.

Disadvantages

  • More expensive than a fixed towbar.
  • You need to store the detached neck somewhere safe (often in the boot).
  • The locking mechanism should be kept clean and occasionally lubricated.

Horizontal detachable vs. vertical detachable

Horizontal detachable Vertical detachable
Slides in from the rear Inserts upwards from underneath
Small part of the receiver may remain visible Usually almost completely invisible when removed
Generally easier to fit and remove Slightly more concealed but can be a bit trickier to attach

Is it as strong as a fixed towbar?

Yes. A properly approved horizontal detachable towbar has the same towing capacity and nose weight rating as the equivalent fixed towbar for your vehicle. The removable design does not make it weaker when correctly installed.

They're a popular choice if you tow only occasionally—such as a caravan, trailer, or bike rack—but want your car to look as original as possible the rest of the time.

Vertical Detachable

A vertical detachable towbar is a removable towbar where the towball assembly is inserted upwards from underneath the vehicle rather than sliding in from behind. It's designed so that when the towball is removed, almost nothing is visible, making it the most discreet type of towbar.

How it works

  • The towball neck is pushed upwards into a socket hidden behind or beneath the rear bumper.
  • It locks into place with a mechanical locking system, usually with a key for added security.
  • To remove it, you unlock the mechanism, release the catch, and pull the towball down and out.

Advantages

  • Virtually invisible when removed, preserving the vehicle's appearance.
  • Ideal for premium vehicles where aesthetics matter.
  • Less likely to interfere with parking sensors when detached.
  • Lockable to help prevent theft.
  • Suitable for towing trailers, caravans, and many towball-mounted bike racks (provided they're compatible).

Disadvantages

  • Usually the most expensive towbar option.
  • Can take a little more practice to fit because you're working underneath the bumper.
  • The locking mechanism should be kept clean and maintained.

Vertical detachable vs. horizontal detachable

Vertical detachable Horizontal detachable
Inserts upwards from underneath Slides in horizontally from behind
Almost completely hidden when removed Receiver may remain slightly visible
Premium, discreet appearance Easier to see and access when fitting
Often slightly more expensive Usually a little less expensive

Is it as strong as a fixed towbar?

Yes. When fitted correctly, a vertical detachable towbar has the same approved towing capacity and nose weight as a fixed or horizontal detachable towbar designed for the same vehicle. The removable mechanism does not reduce its rated strength.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose a vertical detachable towbar if:
    • You want the cleanest possible appearance when not towing.
    • You own a premium or performance vehicle.
    • You tow occasionally and don't mind spending a bit more.
  • Choose a horizontal detachable towbar if:
    • You want a removable towbar that's often a little easier to fit and remove.
    • You're happy with a small part of the receiver remaining visible.
    • You want to save some money compared with a vertical detachable model.

For most occasional users, both types perform equally well for towing. The main difference is how the towball is attached and how discreet the installation looks when the towbar is removed.

Jaw and Ball Detachable

A jaw and ball towbar (also called a combination towbar or NATO towball and pin hitch) is a heavy-duty towing system that combines a 50 mm towball with a jaw (or pin) coupling. It's commonly used on commercial vehicles, pickups, 4x4s, agricultural vehicles, and military vehicles.

How it works

The towbar has two towing options built into one unit:

  • 50 mm towball – Used for standard trailers, caravans, and bike racks that have a conventional ball coupling.
  • Jaw and pin hitch – Used with trailers that have a lunette ring (ring hitch) instead of a ball coupling. The ring sits inside the jaw and is secured by a locking pin.

Advantages

  • Very versatile – Can tow both ball-coupled and ring-coupled trailers.
  • Extremely robust – Designed for heavy-duty use and rough conditions.
  • Suitable for high towing capacities (subject to vehicle and towbar ratings).
  • Popular on:
    • Land Rover Defender
    • Toyota Land Cruiser
    • Ford Ranger
    • Isuzu D-Max
    • Agricultural tractors
    • Recovery vehicles

Disadvantages

  • Larger and heavier than a standard towball.
  • Not as visually appealing as modern detachable towbars.
  • Can interfere with rear parking sensors.
  • Typically intended for commercial rather than everyday passenger car use.

Common uses

  • Horseboxes
  • Plant trailers
  • Agricultural equipment
  • Construction trailers
  • Military trailers
  • Recovery and utility trailers

Is it legal in the UK?

Yes. Jaw and ball combinations are legal in the UK when:

  • The towbar is approved for the vehicle (where required).
  • The trailer uses a compatible coupling.
  • The towing capacity and nose weight limits are not exceeded.

Jaw and ball vs. standard towball

Standard 50 mm towball Jaw and ball
Standard caravans and trailers Standard trailers and ring-coupled trailers
Smaller and lighter Larger, heavy-duty design
Common on cars and SUVs Common on pickups, vans, and commercial vehicles
Not suitable for lunette-ring trailers Suitable for both ball and ring couplings

A jaw and ball towbar is the right choice if you need to tow a mix of conventional trailers and heavy-duty ring-coupled trailers, whereas a standard fixed or detachable 50 mm towball is sufficient for most cars towing caravans, small trailers, or bike racks.

No Electrics

No electrics will be supplied with the towbar.

Simple setup

Comprehensive power

Your adventure starts with your setup. And with Roamer, it’s quick and easy. Simply choose your battery location, attach the cables, configure your chargers, and download our Roamer BMS app for real-time monitoring. Uninterrupted power = uninterrupted adventure.

Safety First

Here at Roamer, we take safety extremely seriously and strive to make the safest LiFePO4 batteries possible. It is no secret that Lithium can be dangerous and whilst LiFePo4 is without doubt, the safest option, it is still not without risk. That’s why we go above and beyond on both compulsory and voluntary tests and certifications. We test every single battery before it leaves the factory by cycling to 100% and 0% and applying a high charge and discharge load to identify potentially faulty cells and connections, test BMS performance and verify cell balance at the top and bottom of the voltage-charge cycle.

Our batteries use only traceable branded cells from tier one manufacturers with lab test reports to verify battery safety as part of the IEC62619, UL9540A and UL1973 certification. Our product and fulfilment processes also meet the courier requirements to ship Dangerous Goods under the UN3480 guidelines and have CE, UKCA, RED, RoHS and ECE-R10 certifications. Find out more about the steps we have taken to ensure maximum safety here.

12 year warranty

Our 12-year warranty includes priority repairs at our UK service centre with free return UK shipping. Roamer guarantees to give a free repair or replacement in case of cells or BMS with defects proven to be due to manufacturing process.

The period of warranty is TWELVE years from the date of shipment. Faults and manufacturing defects can occur with any electrical device and we aim to make the process as simple and pain free as possible. Roamer guarantees to give a free repair, replacement or pro-rated refund/credit in case of cells or BMS hardware with defects proven to be due to manufacturing process (instead of customer abuse and misuse, or general wear and tear).

It is important that you contact us as soon as you notice a fault with your battery. We can talk you through a few simple tests that will help identify any issues. If we cannot resolve the problem remotely then we will arrange to collect the battery from you, and return to our warehouse for testing. Any shipping fees incurred for approved warranty returns will be covered by Roamer.

In the event of a proven manufacturing defect or battery failure that meets the below warranty terms and conditions, we will provide one of the following warranty resolutions:

1. Repair the battery (usually by replacing internal components such as cells or the BMS). The warranty covers the costs of labour, parts and return shipping. Please be aware that it can take up to 15 working days from the date of receiving the battery, to shipping the repaired battery back to you.

2. Replace the entire battery with an equivalent (or better) product. The replacement may be a brand new battery or a refurbished battery or similar or higher specification than the original. We cannot guarantee that the replacement battery will be the same dimensions as the original.

3. Credit you a pro-rated amount which can be used towards the purchase of a new battery. This pro-rated amount is calculated as the percentage of the warranty remaining multiplied by the purchase price. So for example, if you purchased the battery for £1200 and claim 6 years into a 12 year warranty, you would receive a credit of £600.

4. Refund you a pro-rated amount based on the remaining term of the warranty. This pro-rated amount is calculated using the same method as in option 3.

The warranty resolution provided will be at the sole discretion of Roamer.

With all options the original warranty dates are retained, even if the battery has been repaired or replaced with a brand new product.

If we cannot reproduce the problem or if the defect or failure is found to have been caused by customer abuse or misuse then we will return the battery to you, or if you prefer, we can recycle the battery. Depending on the state of the battery, we may be able to offer a credit towards an upgrade. Any shipping costs incurred as a result of a rejected warranty claim will be charged to you.

Non-transferable

This Limited Warranty is to the original purchaser of the Product and is not transferable to any other person or entity. If you did not purchase from Roamer directly then please contact the place of purchase regarding any warranty claim.

Warranty exclusion

This Limited Warranty is designed to protect you against manufacturing defects. It does not cover:

  • Damage due to improper installation; loose terminal connections, under-sized cabling, incorrect connections (series or parallel where not specifically supported), short circuits or reverse polarity connections
  • Damage caused by incorrect charging including the use of unsupported lead acid only chargers, or charged at a voltage or current that exceeds the recommended parameters
  • Environmental damage; inappropriate storage conditions; exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures, fire or freezing, or water damage
  • Damage caused by collision or impact
  • Damage due to improper maintenance; under- or over-charging the Product, dirty terminal connections
  • Product that has been opened, modified or tampered with
  • Product that was used for applications other than which it was designed and intended for, including engine starting
  • Product that was used on an over-sized inverter/charger (any inverter/charger that is rated to 3200 Watts or greater) without the use of a Manufacturer-approved current surge limiting device
  • Product that was under-sized for the application, including an Air Conditioner or similar device having a locked rotor start-up up current that is not used in conjunction with a Manufacturer-approved surge-limiting device
  • Product not stored in adherence to the Manufacturer’s storage guidelines, including storage of the Product at low state-of-charge, 100% state of charge, at temperatures exceeding 40 degrees C or placed on a continual float charge
  • Operation of Bluetooth, either a fault with the app or the bluetooth module inside the battery
  • Updating BMS firmware or PC software.

This Limited Warranty does not cover a Product that has reached its normal end of life due to usage which may occur prior to the Warranty Period. A battery can deliver only a fixed amount of Energy over its life which will occur over different periods of time depending on the application.

For example, using the battery in very high temperatures, may cause the normal end of life to occur before the end of the Warranty Period. The Manufacturer reserves the right to deny a warranty claim if the Product is determined, upon inspection, to be at its normal end of life even if within the Warranty Period.

The suggested number of lifetime cycles is an indication based on laboratory test conditions and is not a guarantee. It is likely that in real world conditions, the achieved number of cycles may be considerably lower especially if you have not followed the recommended care guidelines.

Warranty disclaimer

This limited warranty is in lieu of, and manufacturer disclaims and excludes, all other express warranties. Manufacturer further limits the duration of all, whether statutory, express or implied warranties, including, without limitation, any warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, to the warranty period.

Manufacturer’s exclusive liability for breach of any warranty on the Battery shall be to replace the Battery within the warranty period in accordance with the terms of this limited warranty. In no event shall Manufacturer be liable for any loss or damages of any other kind, whether direct, incidental, consequential including lost profits, exemplary, special or otherwise, including any lost profits or removal, shipping, or installation expenses.

EXCEPT FOR THE WARRANTY SET FORTH ABOVE, SELLER MAKES NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER WITH RESPECT TO THE GOODS, INCLUDING ANY (A) WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY; OR (B) WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE; WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED BY LAW, COURSE OF DEALING, COURSE OF PERFORMANCE, USAGE OF TRADE OR OTHERWISE.

Legal rights

Some countries do not allow limitation on how long an implied warranty lasts or the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, which may vary from country to country.

This warranty shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with UK law. This warranty is understood to be the exclusive agreement between the parties relating to the subject matter hereof. No employee or representative of Manufacturer is authorised to make any warranty in addition to those made in this agreement.
