The detachable and fix swan neck towbars for the Tesla Model Y are now available at Telford Towbars, equipped with the vehicle specific towing electrics to ensure safe and legal towing. If you are interested in a towbar installation on your Tesla Model Y, then there are a few things, shown below, to consider prior to your appointment.
Both the fixed and detachable swan neck towbars fitted by our mechanics are compatible for use with the AL-KO stabiliser without the requirement of a replacement ball. The fixed swan neck towbar is less compatible with common accessories such as bumper protectors or tow-steps with the detachable bar being more suitable for vehicles with parking sensors. In most instances, the towbar is completely invisible once the neck of the towbar has been removed. The removal of the detachable towbar neck allows free access to the rear of the vehicle, with the ability to lock the neck in place using a key.
The detachable option is the most popular for this particular vehicle due to the ability to remove the towbar neck from the underneath the vehicle. This ensures that when you are not towing, the vehicles aesthetics resume, with no towbar or towing electrics visible. The detachable bar is also a great option for those who are only occasionally towing.

On top of the world, on the top of your car! The wide range of Thule Rooftop Tents available at Telford Towbars ensures your adventures are easy, comfortable and fun. Whether you’re going off grid in harsh conditions or experiencing a relaxing family camping trip, the Thule Rooftop Tents have got you covered. The rooftop tent ensures maximum interior space, providing a great space for hanging out, as well as the perfect night sleep amongst nature. Transform your vehicle into your very own home away from home no matter what vehicle you drive.
Benefits of the Rooftop Tent compared to a ground tent:
Prevent the tense atmosphere when having to spend ages packing away a regular tent in the rain. Instead, the rooftop tents pack away in minutes by just folding and zipping up! You don’t have to connect a bunch of poles and secure them in the ground like a ground tent. This means more time exploring and less time setting up camp. Panoramic skylights and windows allow you to stargaze, get closer to nature and keep the tent cool and well ventilated.
Why choose a rooftop tent?
Rooftop tents are a unique way to experience the great outdoors, no matter the conditions. These tents are built to last. They handle bad weather better than ground tents and can be used in tricky terrain unlike motorhomes. Getting up off the ground means that you have easy viewing of the beautiful scenery just outside your tent. Some roof top tents even have built-in sky panels, so you can drift off gazing at the stars.
Most roof top tents have built-in mattresses which are comfier than blow-up mattresses (especially a deflated one!). The bedding remains inside the tent which means you can jump in as soon as the tent is opened. Also, the tent’s flat floor means no more stones poking your back at night. Keep out of reach from mud, sand and the wildlife down below, preventing you from waking up with a spider in your sleeping bag!
How much do they cost?
The rooftop tent is more affordable than a trailer or caravan– but is still a mobile home transported by your car. CLICK HERE to explore the prices and options to suit you! You can also spread the cost of the rooftop tent using Klarna.

The rules on what you can tow are different depending on when you passed your car driving test. The rules will change later in 2021. The new rules will still depend on when you originally passed your car driving test. There are different rules for towing if you live in Northern Ireland. Licences issued before 1 January 1997 you will not be affected by the changes. You’re usually allowed to drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8,250kg maximum authorised mass (MAM). View your driving licence information to check. You’re also allowed to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kg. MAM is the limit on how much the vehicle can weigh when it’s loaded.
Licences issued from 1 January 1997 to 18 January 2013
If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997 to 18 January 2013, you can currently drive either of the following: a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total)a trailer over 750kg MAM, as long as it is no more than the unladen weight of the towing vehicle (up to 3,500kg in total)You’ve had to pass a car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.
Licences issued from 19 January 2013
If you passed your car driving test from 19 January 2013, you can currently drive either of the following: a car or van up to 3,500kg MAM towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (up to 4,250kg in total)a trailer over 750kg MAM as long as the combined MAM of the trailer and towing vehicle is no more than 3,500kg. You’ve had to pass a car and trailer driving test if you want to tow anything heavier.
What will change later in 2021
If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’ll be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM when the law changes. DVLA will update your driving licence record to show that you’re allowed to tow trailers. You’ll get category BE added to your driving licence when you get a new photocard driving licence. You do not need to contact DVLA for this to happen. It will be done automatically. The date the law will change has not yet been confirmed. Sign up for email alerts to be told when the law changes. Car and trailer driving tests are stopping from 20 September 2021. You can no longer book or take a car and trailer driving test from 20 September 2021. However, the law will not change until later in 2021.
What you can do until the law changes
Until the law changes later in autumn 2021, you must continue to follow the current rules about what you’re allowed to tow based on when you passed your car driving test. You can be fined up to £1,000, be banned from driving and get up to 6 penalty points on your driving licence if you tow anything heavier before the law changes.
